the wine
A fantastic full bodied an extremely concentrated sweet red dessertwine made of 100%
Sagrantino, made by 'Mr. Sagrantino' Arnaldo Carprai from Umbria. This
wine is one of Italies finest red sweet wines and creates a fantastic
combination with mature and piqant cheeses

The wine is made of handselected Sagrantino grapes which are carefully
dried at straw mats. After vinification the wine ages for 18 months in
new barriques and 12 months in bottle.

Pairs very with mature and piquant cheeses. 
Drinktemperature is 16-17° C.
Drink until 20 - 25 years after the year of production.

producer
Umbria’s Montefalco zone
effectually operates in the divide existing between the region’s
principal interpretation of traditional and modern wines, with its
primary medium being Sagrantino, a varietal native of Umbria that is
quite the rarity, as its production is limited to a mere 250 acres of
vineyards. One of the leading producers of Sagrantino and the region in
general is Caprai. Though it comprised a mere five acres when founded
in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai, the estate saw continued expansion in
succeeding years, effectively leading the cultivation of Umbria and
earning recognition as one of the foremost producers of Sagrantino.
Caprai achieved standard bearer status through concerted efforts to
establish new vineyards and identify new clones of Sagrantino. Caprai
also produces the Montefalco DOC Rosso (predominantly Sangiovese, with
a small portion of Sagrantino); while the pure Sagrantino is aged in
barrique, the Rosso is matured in Slovenian barrels. Caprai champions
Grechetto, Umbria’s leading indigenous white, through two bottlings and
formally honors Umbria’s recognized affinity with Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot in a blend entitled “Rosso Outsider.” The vineyards comprise
90 acres and cover the production areas of Montefalco, Grechetto dei
Colli Martani, and Sagrantino di Montefalco. Winemaking is currently
overseen by Aranaldo’s son, Marco.

In the late 1980s, Marco turned a family hobby into a radical movement
and produced legendary wines securing Umbria's place in the world of
wine. Before Marco's efforts, the Sagrantino grape was relatively
unknown, as was the small hillside town of Montefalco. Nothing would
indicate the tremendous turnaround this once dormant zone would
achieve. Marco took the lead and invested in the land, applying the
results of painstaking research (with assistance from the University of
Milan) on the indigenous varietal. The result has brought international
attention to the high-tech Montefalco estate and its slick, big red
wines.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco Riserva 25 Anni is the result of Marco
Caprai's passionate research and careful clonal selection of the best
grapes of Sagrantino. It is a jubilee wine produced for the first time
in 1996 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the winery. Since then it
has kept this name together with its unique character, power and
elegance.
