About the
producer
Tenuta Petrolo is one of the garagist producers from Tuscany
and is situated closely to the border of the Chianti Classico near the
commune
of Gaiole.
The remains of the Etruscan and Roman period are still very
close on the surface and gives this piece of land a true historic
dimension. In
the Romanesk church opposite the winery people found evidence that
during the
13th and 14th century, the land
of Petrolo was already
making wine
for the bishop of Arezzo
as a mean
for paying their taxes. The bishop agreed as it gave him trade to the
“North”,
whatever that area might be.
The winery today is owned by the vibrant Luca Sanjust who holds a PhD
in Contemporary Art. He inherited the land with beautiful 19th century
houses, from his grandfather who bought this piece of land almost for
nothing just after the 2nd World War.
The workers of his grandfather always had the feeling this land was
excellent for vineyards and convinced Luca to do some research. After
extensive scientific research, they decided to plant merlot and since
the similarity between the Petrolo microclimate and Pomerol, he worked
in close cooperation with D’n Thienpondt, the winemaker of Le Pin to
create one of the finest estates today in Tuscany.
Luca Sanjust grows mainly Merlot and Sangiovese. Also Petit Verdot and
Cabernet Sauvignon for experimental purposes.
